The need for organs remains great. Currently, more than 119,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for organ transplants (www.unos.org). Each year, approximately 6,000 people die waiting for an organ transplant that would have given them a second chance at life with their families.
DeAndre decided to designate himself as an organ donor and shared his decision with his family. He also registered to be an organ donor when he received his license, making his wishes very clear.
He continues to bless six others with the gift of life. The recipient of DeAndre’s heart is a 17 year old male. His lungs were gifted to a 58 year old woman. DeAndre’s liver was able to help two individuals. A 57 year old received his left lobe. The right lobe of DeAndre’s liver was gifted to a 2 year old boy. The recipient of his pancreas and left kidney is a 43 year old male. DeAndre's right kidney was gifted to a 13 year old boy. The family remains connected to the recipient family, and he is doing very well.
For many people, a better life, or even life itself, may depend on organ donations. Many support organ donation, but support alone is not enough. You can commit to the process by checking the organ donor box when you apply for your driver’s license, by telling your loved ones that you would like to be an organ donor, or you can register online at or .
DeAndre gave his family and friends love, laughter, friendship and joy and he wanted to give someone else the opportunity to have a better life. While the story of DeAndre’s life on earth ends here, for others the story will continue, thanks to organ donation and transplants.
